Upper Hawthorne Historic Mixed Use
This historic 1907 mixed use building is located at the end of a retired streetcar line. It originally held a green grocer on the first floor and apartments above. In the 1970’s a large fire destroyed much of the 2nd floor, initiating a series of unfortunate remodels. By the time we adopted this building in the 1990’s, it needed to be taken back to it’s roots. Our task was to delicately unpeel the layers, like a detective, and research the historic uses. We uncovered transom windows, reinstalled the historic entry, added decorative trims and constructed a partial voluntary seismic upgrade.
